still excited
it's been awhile since an entry but it's not because i've lost interest in training in fact the opposite is true. i can't wait to get out there. i did my first real brick rode 10 ran 4 running, while still not the best thing i do is getting better and easier. i know i've been saying next the swim for a long time but i've been reading total immersion swimming made easier and now i'm really pumped to hit the water. i'm gonna take lessons at the ymca in may and i'm looking into lessons in poulsbo. it's really go time. the ride and run are good just need to tune them up now it's time to get wet.

runniing like something slow
i'm starting to like running more it still hurts alot. my mental attitude is still not good but it's getting better. i need to work on my pace. my shoes are starting to break in and feel better. so no more excuses. it's time to pony up and run like the wind bulls eye, or at least run like a gentle breeze.

strong legs weak mind
here's the thing about me and running i can run but i get bored. my cardio is a lot better the lactic acid build up in my legs is way down, i should be able to run a lot further. i know it's an attitude issue. when given the choice between stopping and going on, i'll choose stop. i just can't seem to get to the point where my second wind will kick in and i'll find the rhythm and just enjoy the moment. i'm weak and need a good flogging.

wetsuit
dare i use the "s" word? swimming. got a loaner wetsuit today and i feel abit self conscious. it's pretty tight and i feel so vulnerable. i'm gonna start hitting the pool to see if i like it. all i know is that it'll help me float. i picked a card from i-ching card deck, similar to a tarot card and asked it about my training and my chances at my upcoming tri challenge it told me to retreat. not sure what that means. anyhow watch out pool the fat man in the tight suit is on the way......hope i don't scare the kids too badly and scar them for life. keep good thoughts for me

the treadmill is my friend it teaches me pace and constant motion it helps me keep up my cardio and to work on my form. i get to watch TV or listen to music it keeps me warm and dry. i know its not the same as running outside but sometimes it just what the doctor ordered. did i mention its level and springy and easy on my sore back and hips and knees. it's all good

My achin back
Here we go. A couple of weeks and I've had my first set back. My lower back is stiff and tender. It hurts to stand, sit heck it even hurts to breath. I don't really know how it happened. It felt stiff two days ago then yesterday after my bike ride it really started to get stiff and by late afternoon it started to really hurt. So I have to listen to my old body and take a few days off. Luckily it's super bowl Sunday and we are heading off to a friends house. Maybe I"ll feel beter by Monday. Gonna go stretch and hope for some relief now.

heart rate monitors
how can anybody train without a heart rate monitor? it's the most valuable tool for a cardiac based athlete. it gives instant feed back on how hard you're working. i use a timex triathlon that gives ave. heart rate, peak heart rate, calories burned and lap times. it's a great tool. mine is on the simple end but it's good for me. my only suggestions are to get the ones that use a replaceable battery and that use the chest strap. i tried the ones that you touch the two sensors on the watch but that's not easy when you're riding and they don't give you the constant information that i find very useful. things are starting to click my weights below 180 for the first time in months, my resting heart rate in around 54 and my recovery rate is way down. next goal is a 5k at the end of the month and then it's swim time (scary)

semi brick
i spun for 30 mins 80% resistance for one song then sprinted 20% resistance for another song. then i went and ran hills alternating running up and walking down. i know it's not a real brick but it's a start. little victories add up. i think i'm gonna pick up a set of aero bars and start getting used to them. if nothing else they'll make the bike look cool. i also think that i'm gonna pick up some new riding shoes my old pair are starting to hurt the top of my feet. in the mean time i'm gonna celebrate a good workout by having a glass of protein and some almonds. by the way, today i went below the 180 lb barrier, 179 even......like i said today is a good day.

the joy of running
there is no joy in running (yet). i'm not a runner but i soon will be. here's the deal at some point your body remembers the freedom of movement. you know how you felt when you were a kid and running was second nature and you could run all day and all night. i didn't feel that today all i felt like was that i was gonna hurl chunks but i have to say when i was done i felt pretty darn proud on myself.
apps and triathlon
doyou know on the iphone there are a bunch of cool apps dealing with the triathlon?
there's one called first time triathlon kinda spendy @ 9.99 but still pretty cool it's a 12 week training plan that's customized to your abilities. there's also an app called ipace that can help you calculte your pace. here's a free app that's pretty neat it follows 2008/2009 ironman world champion craig alexander.
as for me i'm just killin some time till my wife gets home so i can get some track time in.

sunday
i was reading this training site and it said to start running for specific times not distances. so run for 3 minutes walk for 3 minutes. this is supposed to build up my running endurance and get to my 5 k goal by the end of feb. it's supposed to be nice so i think i'm gonna go to the h.s. track, easy on the legs to start.

swimming
i can proper myself through the water. so technically i can swim. but what i can't do is float or tread water or do any other stroke other than the crawl. i also can't swim for very long distances. so when i read these training advice columns they assume that you can swim at least 400 meters. as of right now i can't what i need is a workout plan for someone who hasn't tried to swim any extended distance for a very long time (last time was in high school in 1976) so i need some advice on training.

running
i know that there is a Hugh difference between a treadmill and actually hitting the pavement. but i must admit i am a bit hesitant about running. one of my biggest fears is that i'll start off strong pass the half way point and just be too tired to make it back. when i lived in the city we used to run down the bus line and when we got tired we'd just hop the bus home. that eliminates the fear of going too far, you could just run till your dropped. now that i live in a rural area that's not an option. crazy phobia but its mine. i like running in asics but if there are any other shoes better suited to a triathlon i would love to hear about them. here's my goal to start running by 2/1 and be able to run 3k by 3/1. swimming starts in march.
wish me luck..........

help losing weight
on the livestrong web site there's a section called the daily plate that tracks your caloric intake and your weight. i know it seems really time consuming to enter all the data but it helps me be accountable for what i eat. it also helps me to become more disciplined and i figure training for a triathlon is about discipline. discipline to train, to take care of your gear, to eat correctly. it's a skill that's learned in little steps and tracking my food intake on a daily basis is one of those little steps.

why i love my schwinn and the best climbing music
yesterday was a great day. it wasn't raining there was no wind and the roads were dry. i went for a 90 min 20 mile ride. to everyone with stess in their lives here's the best cure. ride a bike. feel the wind and smile everytime your reach a hill cuz your reward is just on the other side, the sweet down hill glide. here are some of my favorite uphill tunes.

great untold story, triathlon 101
hi there,
i'm not sure if anyone will read this but here goes. this is a blog about training for my first triathlon.
this a story of how t.v. may of saved my life. i'm a 51 year old male who has managed to talk himself into believing that he's in pretty good shape. i have high blood pressure and am a type 2 diabetic, so i have some issures. one day after going to the gym i plunk my fat a@s in front on the television with a beer and a big old roast beef sandwich. we only have the most basic of cable so the only sports channel avaiable is the universal sports channel and it just so happens that it's an iron man triathlon marathon. so i start watching.
i can't believe what i'm watching a 2.4 mile swim, 112 miless on a bike, and if thats not enoough a marathon.
i tell myself that this is for crazy fit young people. then i hear the stories about a man who lost a leg when he was eight, a 20 year old who lost the use of both of his legs from a motorcycle accident, a man and with his disabled son whom he tows during the swim, rides doouble with in a specially made bike and pushes during the marathon. i started to cry. then at the end of the 2008 iron they show this 72 year old woman, the oldest competitor to ever start, and at the end of it all the oldest person to ever finish. when she crosses the line the announcer asks so how old are you. so many great stories, of people willing to suffer and sacrifice just to finish. for every story told there has to be an equally great untold story. i want to be one of those great untold stories. so no more excuses no i'm too old, i can't run that far, or i cant swim (which i really cant). my new motto will be, live life no limits
